The National Herald case concerns the alleged misappropriation of assets of more than ₹2,000 in large integers in associate-grade share transactions. ED has been investigating Associate Journals Ltd, the National Herald company and some congressional leaders under anti-money laundering law since 2016 when it became aware of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case.

Senior Congressman Randeep Surjewala said that Ms Gandhi has isolated herself and that she may be re-tested before her appearance.


The case concerns the ED investigation of alleged monetary irregularities within Young Indian, promoted by the party and owner of the National Herald newspaper. The newspaper is published by Associated Journals Limited (AJL). The questioning of top congressional leaders and thus the Gandhis is part of the investigation to understand the ownership pattern, financial transactions and role of promoters of Young Indian and AJL, the officials said.

Congress has ruled out any fraud, stating that ED closed the case in 2015 and only reopened it at the behest of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).


The recent big party also suspects Prime Minister Narendra Modi of plotting a "cowardly conspiracy" against Rahul and Sonia.


The BJP is using puppet agencies  to intimidate political opponents.Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters after the summons was issued.
